Economic Development Grant Program Concludes – 2024 Grants in Action
June 13, 2025With donor support, the DeKalb County Community Foundation works to enhance quality of life across DeKalb County. Our grants come from a variety of programs—each with unique goals, applicants, and impact. How do these grants make a difference where we live? Find out in the story below. Thank you to our generous donors! Community Needs Grants are made possible through gifts to Community Impact Funds.
Making a Difference Locally
In 2024, the E.T. and Jean B. Juday Fund celebrated 27 years of charitable giving through the Community Foundation. Since its creation, the Fund has granted $115,483 to 34 local organizations—nearly matching its total Fund value in support for the community.
Originally established in 1997 as a Donor Advised Fund, the Judays created the Fund to align with their charitable interests. Following the passing of the last successor advisor in 2013, the Fund was renamed and became a Community Impact Fund, continuing the Judays’ legacy of addressing needs throughout DeKalb County. Community Impact Funds give the Foundation flexibility to address evolving needs through programs like Community Needs, Emergency, and Economic Development Grants, plus Give DeKalb County incentive dollars.
Fueling Positive Change
Grants from the Juday Fund have helped provide educational supplies, advocacy training, adult literacy resources, fi re safety upgrades, new roofs, kitchen appliances, playground equipment, and more. Local programs like the YMCA Early Learning Academy, KEC Fire Science, and ReStart have also benefited from this Fund.
In 2022, a Community Needs Grant from the Juday Fund helped Voluntary Action Center purchase double-stack ovens, a commercial range, and a dishwasher. The upgrade supports the preparation of 80,000+ meals annually for seniors and individuals with disabilities through Meals on Wheels and Congregate Meals. Replacing outdated equipment improved meal quality, efficiency, and staff satisfaction.
“The new ovens let us bake breads and sweet treats while cooking main courses at the same time. Everything’s safer, faster, and more efficient now.” – Bonita Gordon, Kitchen Assistant, Voluntary Action Center
In spring 2024, a Community Needs Grant from the Juday Fund helped Open Door Rehabilitation Center purchase flooring and appliances for a new Life Skills area. The space supports adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in building job and daily living skills, and includes cabinetry, a washer, dryer, and kitchenette.
“The new life skills classroom gives clients hands-on experience in cooking, cleaning, and daily tasks—building confidence, teamwork, and independence. We’re grateful for this space and excited to keep learning together!” – Catherine Gabrillo, Recreation Specialist, Open Door Rehab Center
