Please join us as we welcome Mohammed Labadi, DeKalb representative, to the DeKalb County Community Foundation Board of Directors.
Mohammed was born in Jerusalem, Palestine, and moved to the United States when he was 19. He graduated from NIU with a bachelor’s in electrical engineering technology and earned a master’s in business management from the Keller Graduate School of Business.
“As a representative of DeKalb, I appreciate the unique blend of urban and rural elements that characterizes the area. From its origins as a small farming community, DeKalb now attracts businesses of all sizes and industries, from manufacturing and distribution to cutting-edge technology. In combination with the presence of NIU, this diversity of economic activity creates a robust and varied labor market with ample opportunities for workers of all backgrounds and skill levels.”
While studying at NIU, Mohammed had the good fortune to meet his future wife, Lora. They eventually settled in Cortland, where they have raised their two children. Mohammed is deeply committed to positively impacting his community and is passionate about volunteering and helping others whenever he can. Mohammed holds the position of President of the DeKalb Islamic Center and is proud to have served on the city of DeKalb Economic Development Committee for three years. He is also a successful entrepreneur with interests in several small businesses within DeKalb County, including The Huddle Restaurant and M&M Electric. Recently, he launched a consulting business that specializes in renewable energy. Regardless of the venture, Mohammed finds the most rewarding aspect to be connecting with and supporting a diverse group of people who share his passion for making a difference.
“My appreciation for where I live grows tremendously every time I travel to and from Chicago. Unlike Chicago or its close suburbs, I love being able to see the stars at night and being able to travel five miles in about five minutes. The sense of community here is authentic, and the people here are superb. They say, ‘I care about my community,’ and they mean it.”
Mohammed thoroughly enjoys spending time with family, going out to eat, and supporting local businesses. “I love feeding my soul by reading our holy book and praying daily. It gives me constant peace and reminds me of the important actions we must take in this life, at the heart of which is extending a helping hand to others when and where they need it.”
“I am beyond excited to join the Community Foundation Board, which is all about serving the community and working to improve the quality of life throughout DeKalb County.”
