The Schelkopf family: Charles, Bernie, Steven, and Michael

The DeKalb County Community Foundation is honored to announce the Schelkopf Family Fund, a donor advised fund created by the family to align with their charitable interests in the community.

Russell and Bernie Schelkopf moved to DeKalb County in 1959 when Russell set up his veterinary clinic in Sycamore. Together they raised three sons, Michael, Charles and Steven. As the boys grew older, all three decided to remain in DeKalb County. Michael and Charles followed in their father’s footsteps and became veterinarians, while Steve chose the insurance industry. Russell eventually changed career paths and moved into livestock and swine production, becoming an owner of Illini Farms, Inc. He remained at the business until his death in 2011.

After Russell’s passing, the family held monthly meetings to discuss family business, including philanthropy in the community. Agriculture was a big part of the family’s lives. Giving back to the community that supported agriculture careers was an important ideal for the entire family.

“Our parents have a great admiration and respect for the Community Foundation and the impact it has on our area,” said Charles Schelkopf. “We all agreed that creating a Fund here would be a great tribute to the legacy of our parents. Our family has spent most of their lives in this community and we value the many opportunities that were made available to us. We want to give back by lending a helping hand. The Community Foundation is the ideal vehicle for us and we’re proud to partner with this wonderful community support system.”

Donations to any fund at the Community Foundation, including the Schelkopf Family Fund, can be made online at dekalbccf.org/donate, or by mail to the DeKalb County Community Foundation, 475 DeKalb Ave., Sycamore, IL 60178.
