The DeKalb County Community Foundation announces the creation of the Brett and Thomas Kubasiak Scholarship Fund, established in memory of Brett and Thomas Kubasiak. This new Fund will provide scholarships for graduating seniors at Genoa Kingston High School.

In 1997 Brett Kubasiak, 5 years old, passed away suddenly when he was struck by a car. As Brett’s classmates grew closer to their senior year in high school, his older sister Lauren created the Brett’s Run Genoa Days 5K (now called the Cogs Run) to raise funds for scholarship awards. Since 2007, the Brett’s Run 5K has awarded over $80,000 in scholarships to Genoa Kingston High School graduates.

In 2012 Thomas Kubasiak, 52 years old, passed away suddenly. To honor both her son and husband, Cathy Kubasiak has established a permanent scholarship fund with the DeKalb County Community Foundation.

After 9 years of success with the event, 2015 was the final year of the Brett’s Run 5K with all remaining race funds transferred to the newly established Brett and Thomas Kubasiak Scholarship Fund. “We are so proud that the race was successful and that through this fund, we can honor my son Brett and husband Thomas for years to come,” said Cathy Kubasiak. “We thank the greater community and each and every one of the sponsors for making this event memorable.”

To date there are over 300 funds managed by the DeKalb County Community Foundation that have been established by donors to benefit the greater DeKalb County community. To contribute to the Brett and Thomas Kubasiak Scholarship Fund or to discuss setting up an endowed fund in memory of a loved one, please contact Dan Templin, Executive Director, 815-748-5383 or dan@dekalbccf.org.
