Brian D. Slavenas Memorial Endowment Fund Announced
September 9, 2015The DeKalb County Community Foundation is pleased to announce the newly created Calvin Doty Memorial Scholarship Fund, a scholarship fund geared towards graduating students at Sycamore High School.
Calvin Doty was born in 1927 and lived in Sycamore his entire life. Cal was a friendly man who loved his family, enjoyed fishing and hunting with his Weimaraner dogs, and worked hard day-in and day-out. As an adolescent, Cal worked for the local newspaper, delivered mail for the Post Office, and worked construction. When he turned 18, he entered the United States Army and served as a medic. In 1948 with his discharge pay from the army, Cal and his father Lavern started Doty & Son Concrete products (Sycamore).
Cal Doty was a hardworking man who was always inventing new things. The Cal Doty Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to encourage young people with talent to work with their hands, to invent new things and start small businesses. This award is available to a Sycamore High School graduating student who plans to pursue a certificate or degree in the trades. Students interested in applying should contact the counseling department at Sycamore High School after the first of the year.
To date there are over 50 endowed scholarship funds managed by the DeKalb County Community Foundation! To discuss setting up a fund, please contact Dan Templin, Executive Director, 815-748-5383 or dan@dekalbccf.org.
